Lost Soul Aside Release Date, PS5 and PC Gameplay, Music, World, Story, Combat and Everything Else You Need to Know

Lost Soul Aside has an had a fairly remarkable path to development. What began as a one-man project that went viral in 2016 thanks to its visuals and gameplay has morphed into a highly polished character action game manned by a studio of 29 if not more, after creator Yang Bing was approached by Sony, resulting in the formation of UltiZero Games. Following a generous 17 minute gameplay trailer from the studio, here’s everything we know about Lost Soul Aside so far.

Lost Soul Aside Release Date

While we’re yet to get a release date when this trailer landed, safe to say we should get more details at the the China PlayStation Press Conference 2021 on April 29. It was earlier scheduled for a 2020 release which did not happen. No surprise given ongoing world events like Covid-19.

Lost Soul Aside Platforms

Lost Soul Aside is slated for the PS4, PS5, and PC. Don’t expect an Xbox Series X or S release for the first 12 months at least due to Sony’s involvement in publishing the game.

Lost Soul Aside and PlayStation’s Involvement Through the China Hero Project

If you’re wondering how and why PlayStation got involved with Lost Soul Aside, we asked Niko Partners Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad. Niko Partners is one of the few firms that tracks the Chinese video game market.

“Consoles were banned in China between 2000 and 2014, which meant that most Chinese game developers focused on PC and mobile game development during this time,” he says. “PlayStation created the China Hero Project in 2016 as a way to support Chinese game developers and bring more local games to its platform in China.

The project provides developers with funding and support from PlayStation and its partners to help them develop and release the game worldwide. This not only helps PlayStation appeal to Chinese gamers in Mainland China, but also brings unique Chinese developed titles to a global audience. There are currently 14 games enrolled in the project, with a few such as Anna: Mutationem and Project Boundary set to release this year.”

Lost Soul Aside, along with other recently announced titles such as Bright Memory: Infinite and Black Myth: Wu Kong, shows what Chinese indie devs can bring to the table in regards to AAA console and PC titles.”

Lost Soul Aside Music

If the music you hear in the Lost Soul Aside trailer sounds familiar, it’s because DMC 5 and Resident Evil 2 Remake composer Cody Matthew Johnson confirmed that he’s involved in the development of its soundtrack.

Lost Soul Aside Protagonist

The name of Lost Soul Aside’s protagonist is Kazer and he’s accompanied on his journey by what Yang Bing referred to in an interview as a crystal dragon. During the gameplay trailer, we don’t get to know what the dragon’s name is but even though it looks like a dragon, it says it is not. Rather, it can take the shape of anything it pleases, all while communicating with other monstrous beings you come across in the game world.

Lost Soul Aside Combat

The gameplay trailer gave us a pretty good idea of what to expect from the final product. Combat is lightning fast with Bayonetta-esque witch time, multiple weapon types ranging from rapiers to giant buster swords reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII Remake. The combat is in real-time and weapon-swapping seems instantaneous and at one point Kazer even conjures up a wall that he uses as a shield. When in battle there’s a lot going on making us wonder if there are any visual indicators for users to toggle in order to make avoiding enemy attacks a bit more easier.

Lost Soul Aside Platforming

Aside from high intensity combat, the game appears to have a decent bit of platforming and exploration between pummelling foes. One of the sequences appeared to have Kazer jump from pieces of a crumbling bridge with no QTE indicators in sight, before relying on help from his companion to make the final jump.

Lost Soul Aside World

From what we’ve seen of the game world, there seems to be a heady mix of sci-fi elements with laser-shooting gunships as well as mystical beings reminiscent of monsters you’d square off against in traditional high-fantasy fare. One enemy Kazer fights early on in the trailer claims that the world’s “Church” has ruled him an outlaw while the gunships targeting him belong to an emperor of sort. All of this suggests elaborate bits of lore that should hopefully come to the forefront when the full game is out.

Lost Soul Aside Story

If the gameplay trailer is any indication, Lost Aside appears to be focussed on Kazer and the crystal dragon trying to get more powerful beings to join their cause in some shape or form. Most likely in a similar way to how the crystal dragon morphs into Kazer’s weapon or a surfboard when needed. In addition to this, Kazer seems to be hunted down by the authorities and one of his combatants even calls him inhuman. Through the trailer there’s a fair bit of banter between Kazer and the dragon with the latter asking ever so often to “take over” from Kazer in combat, suggesting that it has potentially its own motives that may not be in line with Kazer’s.

It’ll be interesting to see how Lost Soul Aside shapes up. We should have more information at the China PlayStation Press Conference 2021 on April 29. Perhaps by the time it’s ready to ship, Sony would have sorted its ongoing PS5 supply issues that have plagued markets like India.
